SintixErr Gallery Real Life and Second Life Updates

March 26th, 2007 by Morning Dagger

REMINDER: You can register for Second Life and drop right into the gallery, skipping orientation, by clicking on this URL: http://jackwhitsitt.com/dcsl/?page_id=8 (it’s the “Visit the Gallery” link up top).

This post is just an update post. A number of things are happening right now:

1. Someone from dorkbot in DC contacted me while I was in Miami about talking to them at their upcoming meeting this week. I’d love to do it, but haven’t heard back from them. If any of you are involved in that, please get with me. I think there’s a lot of crossover between the gallery’s mission and what dorkbot does. (Edit: Just heard back. This will happen in May, probably, but I’m still going to the meeting Wed.)

2. A cooperative relationship between our gallery and a real-life brick and mortar gallery in NYC (which also has a Second Life presence) is a go. They are going to be selling the work, in Second Life and Real Life, of some of our artists (and potentially showing them in Real Life if there is enough interest). More details will be forthcoming today

3. This agreement means Ill have more room for DC art shortly and will be making additional callouts when the time comes

4. We now have gobs of land. Seriously, even more than last time I posted. We own more than an eight of the area. Im working with Enniv to identify the best ways to use the land. Right now, we’re thinking of a post-apopalyptic Wizard of Oz theme….(more to follow on that)

5. Since the area is so big, we’ve been building a monorail ride to get around the park in…it stops at 4 or 5 useful places both on my property and enniv’s.

6. We have another anchor (this one modern art) gallery Im lending land to at the other end of the property. They’re almost full as well (with art) and I think we’re going to start cross-promoting events shortly.

7. The March 27th thing at Galaxy Hut may not happen (well, our bit might not). We’re working out internet connectivity issues and I’ll keep everyone posted on that.

8. Eight, Eight, I forget what eight was for….

 9. We’re consistently hitting a decent traffic rating and, while we’re obviously not ranked as high as we were opening night, we’re maintaining visibility.

10. I still need a video streaming service. Quicktime compatible. Anyone? Bueller? We can pay.

Im heading there right after work today. Basically, we’ll be asking them if there’s a wired/land net connection there (vs wireless) – we can use that. If there is, Ill email you all from there. If not, Ill go to the nearest starbucks and email you from there.

Not much to be done right now…Ill see if I can get a signal strengthener for the Arlington Wireless and try that if worst comes to worst.

Im also talking to a streaming host provider to see how much theyll charge me for sending video into SL…a provider I -know- works with SL.

err, get in touch with me — I still have the “mock-up” (idea, but not implemented) on how to do quicktime with laptops, but we’d need to be able to access the local networking of wherever we were ‘casting from. If there’s not time this time around, we can try to find a venue properly “equipped” for whenever next time is.

maybe I’ll try it at home tonight, since we are not doing yoga from the looks of it.

I can always put Darwin on the laptop…(allowing for the normal technical difficulty, Im sure its possible)…but as you point out, I cant be sure that I can control the local network we’re cam-ing from (SL has to point back in…unless we punch out to a proxy somewhere and allow traffic back in, but thats going to be a bandwidth and ‘too much complexity’ problem, I think)…so the “running the stream server locally” is cool for some events, but not all (maybe not most).

However, it might be cheaper for me to upgrade my home net connection and run darwin there than the streaming server, so figuring out how to do that would still be useful…
