In conjunction with the upcoming ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development’ celebration, this panel intends to deepen understanding of the values of artistic and cultural diversity, highlight the importance of individuality as well as the synthesis of culture, and discuss the role of arts in creating cross-cultural dialogue and building local-global communities. “Creative Diversity – Diverse Creativity†will host experts from the culture, arts, and development field. The panel discussion will be then followed by a question and answer session and a reception later.

Through art judging and discussion, Artomatic artists will compete
alongside artists in Second Life for cash prizes.
Virtual Sculpture Contest
8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Second Life virtual sculptors will compete for cash prizes. There will
be a jury prize, an audience prize and a runner-up prize in each
category. Artomatic attendees will be able to ask the sculptors
questions and will provide input on the “Audience Favorite” award
winner.
Virtual Bands and Artomatic Bands
Throughout the evening
Real-life performers at Artomatic will be broadcast via audio and
video into Second Life. Second Life performers will also play live in
Second Life. A full music schedule will be available prior to May 19.
Ok. So, while Im still scheduling this, I thought Id post it here as soon as I knew: We’re going to do an Art Critique coming up that will occur in both Second Life and Real Life. What will happen is that virtual attendees will bring their art to a predetermined gallery (Im not sure if it will be mine or Eshi’s) and gather around it. Real life attendees will either bring the art they have in Artomatic or a camera/digital snap of it (have to work with Artomatic people on which this will be). Each work will be discussed in turn, one after another, by both audiences/participants. Second Lifers will be able to hear the discussion going on in Real Life and Real Lifers will be able to see, via the projection, the discussion going on in Second Life. Both sides will participate in the same critique of the same images - whether RL or SL.
This will be NEAT ![]()
Since we’re getting so much new traffic here, I want to summarize what’s happening:
We’re a free to exhibit, free to visit art gallery in the virtual world Second Life specializing in art fro Washington, DC. We have 19 artists and 80+ pieces of art right now. If you’re a DC artist and would like to exhibit, comment here or email me at sintixerr@gmail.com
The gallery is part of a larger art park in Second Life Im building with a couple of other people.
We specialize in being a surreal looking gallery for real life 2D artworks such as paintings, drawings, photography, etc. However, artistically, Im just using this as a metaphor to help people understand the potential value of Second Life type worlds to the artistic community. It lets people dip their toes into it in a form they understand. Longer term, Im very much interested in new styles and mediums that develop out of these worlds - Second Life has a style of its own and is a completely unique artisti medium in its own right - as well as how they can help mix worlds and allow them to bleed to each other.
That last bit is why, through the organization I work with in DC - Art Outlet - we are holding live “real life” and mixed “real life and second life participation” events in this virtual art park.
Currently, for the next 5 weeks or so, we are hosting the virtual extention of DC’s large 600 artist and performer art event “Artomatic”. We broadcast periodically live events into second Life so people can attend remotely. So far we’ve broadcast The Mesmers (though some wireless network difficulties which have been resolves), a short walk around of the Artomatic art, and Pig Alien’s lesson in Ping Langua. We will also be doing artist interviews live, other bands, more walkthrough’s etc.
We also have a relationship with a gallery in New York, which also has a Second Life gallery - Small World Gallery - and rotate artists into their gallery for sales purposes. If enough people like the work there, they do a solo show for the artist (virtually). If that show goes well enough, they consider bringing their real life work to NYC for a real life show.
To check out the venue, click on the “Visit The Gallery” link above. If you need help, never hesitate to IM sintixerr@gmail.com
For those of you AT Artomatic, please feel free to walk around the area. Do us a favor and, when you’re done, hit control-shift-h to return to the gallery!

 Here’s my press release:
 ——
District Art in Second Life
Artomatic Embraces a Virtual World
Washington, DC - April 13, 2007 – Artomatic, the District’s one-of-a-kind multimedia art show will be extending into Second Life this year.  Featuring more than 600 regional artists and performers and running from April 13 – May 20, Artomatic hopes to mix real and virtual art, events, and artists into a seamless whole. Â
To do this, Artomatic will be projecting a Second Life gallery for DC artists, the SintixErr, onto a wall all day every day for the entire 5 week duration of the event. Â
Various live events – musical performers, poetry readers, and even one woman teaching a fictional language – will have both audio and video feeds broadcast from Artomatic into Second Life.  Additional ad-hoc broadcasting of art and artists interviews into Second Life will also take place.
Certain other happenings, such as the live, timed virtual sculpture contest going on tonight will take advantage of both real and virtual audience participation simultaneously as attendees vote to give their favorite sculpture artist a cash prize award.
These events will be hosted by the Spirit Fens Art Development Group and the SintixErr Gallery for DC artists in Second Life, which currently provides a free space for regional artists to display their wares in the virtual world. Â
With 90,000 square feet of space, a history of being eclectic, engaging - and occasionally even eye-popping, Artomatic is sure to, in addition to exploring long-term mixed reality events, provide plenty of entertainment to both real and virtual arts fans alike during its 5-week run.
Second Life users can visit the event space by teleporting to Spirit Fens: 31,29,24
Users new to Second Life can register through the SintixErr Gallery’s website at http://jackwhitsitt.com/dcsl/
More information on Artomatic can be found at http://artomatic.org

Â
Apologies for the short notice confirmation here. The Second Life part of the Art Outlet Galaxy Hut event tomorrow is ON. There will be three bands playing and one stand up comedian, and I will be projecting/demonstrating the gallery and Second Life.
The Galaxy Hut address is:
2711 wilson blvd, Arlington, VA 22201
It’s within walking distance of both the Courthouse and the Clarendon metro stops (I think Clarendon is closer).
The schedule is as follows:
7:00 pm Video projections of virtual exhibit curated by Jack Whitsitt
7:40 pm - 8:00 pm Stand Up Comedy by Jermaine Fowler
8:00 pm - 9:00 pm Ben F. Cocciaro (?)
9:00 pm - 10:00 pm Jay Rees (accoustic)
10:30 pm - 12:00 am The Saviours(glam)
I will be attempting to stream audio and video from the event into Second Life. Similar to what we did last time, but with live bands, actual video, and a real microphone instead of an ipod
If you cant make it in real life, click HERE to try and visit us in Second Life
Caveat (and the reason for the confirmation delay): When this was first suggested, there was an assumption on my part that the selected venue (out of my hands) had net access. It doesn’t. We’re going to be attempting to use Arlington’s free access and boosting that for our purposes. It SHOULD work, it MAY NOT. This is the reason I havent heavily advertised it. If net access does not work, Ill be projecting the/a movie of SL and screen shots and information for people to help spread the word.
I also have room to add more art, so if you want more up send it to me or point me to it (even if youve done so already).
REMINDER: You can register for Second Life and drop right into the gallery, skipping orientation, by clicking on this URL: http://jackwhitsitt.com/dcsl/?page_id=8 (it’s the “Visit the Gallery” link up top).
This post is just an update post. A number of things are happening right now:
1. Someone from dorkbot in DC contacted me while I was in Miami about talking to them at their upcoming meeting this week. I’d love to do it, but haven’t heard back from them. If any of you are involved in that, please get with me. I think there’s a lot of crossover between the gallery’s mission and what dorkbot does. (Edit: Just heard back. This will happen in May, probably, but I’m still going to the meeting Wed.)
2. A cooperative relationship between our gallery and a real-life brick and mortar gallery in NYC (which also has a Second Life presence) is a go. They are going to be selling the work, in Second Life and Real Life, of some of our artists (and potentially showing them in Real Life if there is enough interest). More details will be forthcoming today
3. This agreement means Ill have more room for DC art shortly and will be making additional callouts when the time comes
4. We now have gobs of land. Seriously, even more than last time I posted. We own more than an eight of the area. Im working with Enniv to identify the best ways to use the land. Right now, we’re thinking of a post-apopalyptic Wizard of Oz theme….(more to follow on that)
5. Since the area is so big, we’ve been building a monorail ride to get around the park in…it stops at 4 or 5 useful places both on my property and enniv’s.
6. We have another anchor (this one modern art) gallery Im lending land to at the other end of the property. They’re almost full as well (with art) and I think we’re going to start cross-promoting events shortly.Â
7. The March 27th thing at Galaxy Hut may not happen (well, our bit might not). We’re working out internet connectivity issues and I’ll keep everyone posted on that.
8. Eight, Eight, I forget what eight was for….
 9. We’re consistently hitting a decent traffic rating and, while we’re obviously not ranked as high as we were opening night, we’re maintaining visibility.
10. I still need a video streaming service. Quicktime compatible. Anyone? Bueller? We can pay.
Meh. There was some bizarre junk in my last post, so that’s prevented the rest of the post (and older posts!) from appearing for a few days. Ugh. Anyway, that’s been resolved.
In other news, we’ve been having some interesting discussions with other galleries in-world for possible collaboration and have been having some great discussions about the work here with gallery visitors. Yesterday, for instance, I had a brief but pleasant chat about the art with Torley Linden.
Aside from the SintixErr Gallery itself, I’ve begun the development of the neighboring land for art purposes. The SintixErr itself takes up about 1500+sqm of space, which leaves me with about 7000ish sqm to use - and it’s all going towards building a large art park. I’ve lent some space to a couple from Europe to build a modern art tower with a nightclub at top (SLudio 54, heh) as one of the anchor galleries in addition to the SintixErr. In front of the Modern Art Tower will be a large event space with screens and self-rezzing seats for live performances and live art events. We also have 3 towers with 5 400 sqm platforms floating in the air. This space will be for other galleries, art stores, etc. The floating towers leave all of the ground space for temporary activities, installations, experimentation, faires, etc. I’m also working on an interactive art exhibit, but don’t want to talk about it too much yet.
My neighbor, Enniv Zarf, is building us a monorail for the whole area. Two sets of cars will be running continuously through the area allowing visitors to get on and off at some of the main points of interest in the area.
So, lots is going on and I’ll keep everyone updated!
Ok, this is actually a self-review of the Second Life gallery opening event last night…a lessons-learned so-to-speak:
The event went off well. We had some glitches and things we could have done better, but I was really impressed with how it came together. Id like to thank everyone who helped out - Nofnca, Doug-her-Bf, and the Warehouse in particular - your help was invaluable. Id also like to thank the participating artists as well for supporting this and, in particular, those who showed up in “real life” and those who showed up in Second Life. That was really neat
So, here are what I think our successes, next steps, things we could have done better, and things we didnt do but will next time are:
—–Successes—–
1. We really blurred lines last night. That was a huge goal of mine and we did it. Conversations in real life and conversations in Second Life actually bled over into each other a few times last night. People in virtual reality heard what we were saying and began to talk about it…and vice versa. Thats the coolest thing that can happen at an event like this and it’s unique to the medium. It doesnt work the same way with conference calls or things like that… And it’s not just that the events bled into each other, but that they translate to each other as well. A video conference is cool, but its the same medium being connected on both ends. In this case, we merged multiple mediums to great, constructuve effect.
2. There was a GREAT turnout: Over three days, 156 people visited the gallery - 40 people on the opening itself. If you compare percentage of the Second Life population to that of DC, those 156 ppl are the same as if 2500 DC residents had shown up in 3 days to a real life art gallery!
3. Because of the turnout, we’re now in the top 10 or 20 in every type of search in SL for art places or art events
High ranking effects were seen today as I gave a number of tours to ppl who found us through generic searches – that didn’t happen before
4. A number of people (two in particular) in Warehouse were really interested in what we were doing and wanted to explore this type of event for their own nonprofit work.
5. Along those lines, the projection really helped merge the art event into the walkthrough “normal” bar business…like a live event does. The integration into normal daily business was cool
6. People who were unsure of what Ive been going on about have a much better idea of the potential and unique benefits of the medium to showing art, throwing events, and creating art.
—–NEXT EVENT—–
We’ll be doing a show at Galaxy Hut March 27. This will be a larger, more interesting, well put together event (the first ones are always the hardest! Second ones much better!). Three bands will be streamed with video into Second Life. I am also working with my neighbors there to create a monorail system to take visitors through all of the local galleries and entertainment areas. We’re also building a huge events center nearby to the gallery for this gig. It will be really neat.
Id like the artists to let me know if they’d like their work kept up for this next event or taken down (this next event will probably see more attention, but I don’t want to assume that you want your work there indefinitely). This is also now the time to tell me if youd like to swap out for –different- pieces.
—–Need to do better in the future—–
1. Hardware and setup. Every single hardware or connectivity problem we had last night could have been avoided and wasn’t. A lot of the setup was new, but due to time constraints it had not all been tested together. We had a network card on the projecting machine that just flat out wasn’t working due to incompatibility. Ugh.
2. Co-MC. I spent a lot of time trying to play host in two places at once. In the future, someone will need to move around the Second Life event and read out comments and questions for people in real life…and someone else in real life will need to play the same role going back into second life.
3. Have generic accounts ready (2-3) for those that don’t have one
4. Marketing: A number of our callouts in SL apparently never got through. I’ll find root cause and resolve that by the next event
5. I wanted to have various contests with cash prizes and giveaways, but that was more complicated than estimated and my multi-world moderation interfered with that. We’ll have it automated next time.
—–Things we didn’t do but will next time—–
1. Have better audio quality. We kept the audio quality down because we weren’t sure of how stable it was going to be. We know now and will increase the quality next time
2. have Video: We just didn’t have time to work out the video, which is more complicated than audio. However, it’s something that’s not “new” to second life, so we’ll have it next time
3. Sales: We ultimately didn’t have anything for sale this time, but for those of you who indicated that it was ok, we’ll do so next time.
4. Professional photographer in Second Life. We need to capture these events better. Ill hire someone next time as a documentarian
————————–
So thats it. The gallery is available to any DC artist, feel free to contact me and let me know what your ideas are and we’ll work something out!
I have an account with a stream hosting provider now…and their expected time to set me up -mostly- falls within the bounds of the party…so there’s a very good chance we’ll be streaming AV back into SL tonight. If not, it’s a done deal for the 27th. I also picked up a projector finally of my very own. It was getting to be tiring and a lot of hastle to borrow, rent, negotiate, sell my soul for other projectors. Also, I dont want to be limited to a screening room - I want this to show up as part of the bustle and hum of the venues.Â
EDIT: The streaming account has been set up…and, while it’s not tested, I see no reason why we won’t have both audio and video streaming into SL tonight
So, it looks like it’s going to be fun. We’re going to have a cash prize contest tonight (as long as SL bugs dont prevent me from rezzing new objects). That will involve people dropping me notecards with the name of one of the works of art by the artists I choose. I think Ill do it hourly? If people do that and pay $25L or so, they’ll be in the running for the big pot. Hopefully that means people will look at the art AND contribute in.Â
Also, if you’re going to be joining us from outside of DC, welcome ![]()
As I’ve discussed previously (and as is listed in the upcoming events section), we’re going to have a small artists’ get together at the Warehouse in downtown DC March 16th and 9pm.
Please join us if you’re curious what this is all about!
Directions can be found HERE
Also, if you’re in the DC area and are interested in exhibiting or performing in our facility, please contact me. We also have more than twice our current space going unused - it’s being reserved for large events, art installations, etc.
If you have a crazy 3D world idea you want to try out, contact me and we can probably arrange something
Remember to sign up at THIS link if you haven’t already.
The SintixErr Gallery is an 8 floor virtual gallery in the 3D community-built world Second Life. We have purchased a sizeable amount of land and built a state-of-the-art open-air building in SL for the purposes of helping Washington, DC based artists and performers present their art to the whole world and work in the cutting-edge of art today.
If you are new to Second Life, please use the “Visit the Gallery” link at the top of this site instead of going to secondlife.com. We have our own Second Life registration and redirection capability there that will drop you off straight into our gallery and allow you to skip the lengthy orientation process that occurs when you register at secondlife.com
We’re just getting this page up and running here, but the gallery is open for visitors in Second Life at Spirit Fens 27,50,52
For a list of artists with work currently hanging in the gallery, please visit “Current Exhibit” at the top of the page.
